TIME's 'Person of the Year' - Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg

He has already become one of the richest and most generous men on the planet.

Now Mark Zuckerberg has gone one better and become the most influential of them all after being named TIME magazine's 'Person of the Year'.

The 26-year-old became the second-youngest person ever to receive the award due to the impact of Facebook, the social networking website he founded.

Read the TIME essay explaining "Why We Chose Him."

The annual Person of the Year award is a staple of American journalism. Others considered for the honor this year were Afghan President Hamid Karzai, the trapped Chilean miners, the Tea Party movement in the United States, and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Film-goers got a taste of Zuckerberg and the early days of the site in this year's movie, "The Social Network."

Zuckerberg grew up in Dobbs Ferry, New York, and graduated from high school at Phillips Exeter Academy.

There, he studied Latin and became a fan of the classics. At Harvard University, which he attended for two years before dropping out to pursue Facebook, Zuckerberg "was known for reciting lines from epic poems such as "The Iliad,'" writes Jessica Vascellaro in The Wall Street Journal.

From Shakira to "ending desire," the interests Zuckerberg has listed on his private Facebook page are certainly unexpected. Among the others are "Eliminating Desire, Minimalism, Making Things, Breaking Things, Information flow, Revolutions, Openness."

His favorite musicians include Daft Punk and Lady Gaga.

Among his favorite TV shows, he lists "The West Wing," which, as The New Yorker's profile of Zuckerberg points out, was written by Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the screenplay for "The Social Network."

Friends and co-workers call him "Zuck." But Zuckerberg has earned other nicknames, too. The Wall Street Journal says his mom used to call him "Princely" when he was young. When he joined the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity at Harvard, his friends took to calling him "Slayer," writes Rebecca Davis O'Brien, who attended Harvard with Zuckerberg and wrote a piece about him in The Daily Beast.

World's Largest Solar-Powered Boat

The TURANOR PlanetSolar, the world's largest solar-powered boat, has just completed the first stage of its journey around the world – a trans-Atlantic journey from Monaco to Miami. The Swiss-designed solar-powered catamaran left Monaco on the 27th of September and docked in Miami just a few days ago, on the 28th of November.

At 101.7ft (31 meters) long and 49.2ft (15 meters) wide, the TURANOR PlanetSolar is the world's largest solar-powered boat. The vessel is completely fuelled by renewable energy, with its solar cells having a 22% efficiency rate. These are the highest rated cells available for purchase on the market, and the cells cover over 500 square meters of the ship. The solar cells are able to power two electric motors which are found in the hull, giving the ship at a top speed of 14 knots. Most notably, the large surface area of solar cells means that the catamaran can travel for up to three full days, even without direct sunlight – any excess energy is stored in a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery.

Shah Rukh Khan and Bollywood in Wikileaks

Days after news broke that US diplomats in India suggested taking a softly-softly approach in Afghanistan by sending in Bollywood stars to help stablise the country, it has now emerged that the industry's biggest star, Shah Rukh Khan, was the subject of a separate cable.

The cable concerned a threat by the Shiv Sena, a right-wing Indian political party, to ban screenings of the actor's movie "My Name is Khan", a 2010 film made by Karan Johar.

"The Shiv Sena had threatened to ban screenings of Shah Rukh Khan's upcoming movie, 'My Name is Khan', because Shah Rukh Khan publicly lamented the absence of Pakistani cricket players in India's professional cricket league for the coming season," says the cable, dated February 22, 2010, as reported in the UK's Guardian newspaper.

The cable reported how Shiv Sena goons burnt posters of the movie and protested in front of his Khan's home, calling for him to "move to Pakistan".

"Khan himself did not bid on any Pakistani players as co-owner of one of the frachises," it said.

While some theatre owners refrained from screening the film on its opening day due to security concerns, "a show of force by the police convinced theatres to roll out a full release" the next day.

"With protests and controversy generating far more international buzz than the typical Bollywood movie, Khan's new movie opened to packed audiences in Mumbai and elsewhere," it added.

In August 2009, Khan was stopped upon entry into the United States, where he was to participate in a slew of South Asian-related events, including promotions for "My Name is Khan". Immigration officers pulled him aside at Newark airport in New Jersey, questioning him for over an hour about the nature of his visit and asking for details of American companies that could vouch for him, before he was released.

Last week, it emerged that a March 2007 cable suggested the appeal of Bollywood stars could spotlight social issues in Afghanistan.

In response to a request from Washington for "specific, concrete ideas for opportunities for India to use soft power in helping Afghanistan's reconstruction," US diplomats in India said Bollywood was an area that "seems ripe" and added: "We understand Bollywood movies are wildly popular in Afghanistan, so willing Indian celebrities could be asked to travel to Afghanistan to help bring attention to social issues there."

However, the U.S. embassy's proposal to send Bollywood stars to Afghanistan never materialised.

Bollywood movies have been hugely popular in Afghanistan for decades. The 1975 hit action-romantic caper "Dharmatma", which starred Hema Malini, was the first Indian film to be shot in the country.

In recent years, despite security concerns, leading Bollywood banner Yash Raj Films shot its 2006 production "Kabul Express" in Afghanistan starring top actors John Abraham and Arshad Warsi.

England wins 2nd Ashes Test against Australia

England have an upper hand in the ongoing Ashes series after their spin wizard Graeme Swann bowled them to victory with a 5-wicket haul in Adelaide. The victory marked the visitor's 100th test victory over Australia. Neither rain nor the lower order could save the host on the fifth day.

Graeme Swann took 3 of the last 6 wickets to tumble Australia for 304 to complete a comprehensive innings and 71-run victory in the second Ashes test. This was Australia's first innings defeat at home since their capitulation to the Mighty West Indies at Perth in 1993.

Though Australia won thee ton and elected to bat first, it was England who made a dramatic start to this Test with the ball. They handed Australia their worst start in a decade with 3 wickets for 2 runs in the first morning. But Australia went on to score 245 with a fine knock from Mike Hussey (93).
England made a great start with the bat too. Centuries from Alastair Cook (148) and Kevin Pietersen (227-career best), half centuries from Bell and Trott sealed England a mamooth total of 620 with a comfortable lead of 380.

Things went wrong again for Australia on the second innings. The host ended the fouth day with 238/4. This time too, it was Hussey (44*) who was saving his side after Peterson dismissed Clarke on the last ball of 4th day.

On the fifth day, Australia resumed at 238-4 with high hopes of salvaging a draw or being saved by positive forecast rain. But Graeme Swann, Jimmy Anderson & Steven Finn claimed the last 6 wickets for 66 runs and wrapped up the test with a 1-0 lead in the series before lunch.

Kevin Pietersen was voted 'player of the match' after scoring a career-best 227.

The first Test ended in a draw. The third test starts on December 16th in Perth and England, which holds the Ashes after winning at home last year, could easily retain the old urn wiht a 1-0 lead.
